What's New

May 2002

  • New pictures
    • A keepsake from my father, Richard Marion Dawes, for his work on the Bonnet Carre Spillway protecting New Orleans from floods.
    • My mother, Addie McKay Dawes, infant. Where do we get the big eyes from? Answer...

Parents

Starting a new section here.

Richard Marion Dawes

Dad was an engineering student in South Dakota who left college after 2 years to do surveying work in the Great Flood of 1927. After meeting and wedding Addie McKay in Arkansas, he settled in Louisiana, where he laid the bench marks for the Bonnet Carre Spillway in 1929. The original of this cartoon by New Orleans' great John Chase is framed and hanging in my living room.

If you want a copy suitable for framing (8.5x11") you may download the PDF version (1.6MB) or write me, and I'll print one out for you.

I will be creating a page especially for Addie and Richard some day, stay tuned. But here's a great picture of my mother, Addie. It answers the question  "how come y'all have such big eyes...", doesn't it?

Children, Spice, and Grandchildren

The Internet is a great way to keep up with children and grandchildren.

Western branch:

Maggie
San Francisco teacher is married to Don Souza, programmer. She writes: maggie.jpg (32232 bytes)"I've had a good teaching job (kindergarten) in a multi-cultural setting since last June (2003).
...Don and I are homeowners ... all my spare time is spent fixin' this place up. A wallpaper hanger was one of the former owners, and each room has its own distinctive look! Some have called it James Bond Goldfinger era dining room, but I call it the "raised velour olive green pseudo fleur de lis" wallpaper, and the "turquoise Brady Bunch flowers" in the kitchen, and the "painted burlap" in the living room. Our "insert" fireplace is surrounded by what Chuck calls "Popeye's fried chicken lava rock". Sigh. If only they had left the original 1940 mantle. We have replaced all the scarey outdated electrical, and put in a perimeter drain. Wheeee. $$$$$$$$... It's fun being a homeowner and the neighbors are nicer, too, than when you rent."

Australia:

Maura and Megan
moved to Australia! Maura has become a proponent of Aborigine rights, taking a page from the book of the nearly-famous Lt. William Dawes, early explorer of Australia... Megan is a very charming and flexible young lady! Maura has married Steve, an old friend from early California days. Steve has been in Australia since 1986, and teaches ensemble at Southern Cross University. From the school Web site, I learned that "he is an experienced professional guitarist, bassist, composer, arranger, producer and engineer who has specialized in styles ranging from bluegrass to techno." They are living in Byron Bay, NewVisit Byron Bay! South Wales. This is one of Australia's best known tourist attractions and one of the world's most popular backpacking destinations, known for whale watching and sub-tropical rainforests. The region is steeped in Aboriginal tradition with many sites which have special significance for the local Bundjalung people. Byron Bay has its renowned East Coast Blues Festival at Easter, and Lismore has a Music Festival in October.

Sister Dorothy Dawes, OP
Order of Preachers (aka "Dominicans") is a true Netizen! A Dominican sister for 50 years, Editor of the community's newsletter Veritas, and the community's Archivist. Dorothy and I collaborate in the design of her community's Web pages. She keeps our Dad's genealogical legacy on her Mac, but is too busy to fool with it much. She also contributes articles to the J.W.Dawes Family Newsletter, a group founded by our Dad about thirty years ago. When a new baby is born in our family Dottie will furnish a pedigree, charting what our family has so far recorded.
